Items of Interest, January 3, 2024 - January 8, 2024

It’s a rough and dark world out there and 2024 has started the way 2023 has ended, with death and destruction all around, rising f The campaign that removed the President of Harvard was about DEI, not plagiarism ascism, scapegoating of innocents, and democracy in peril. But there are also causes for hope. Erin In The Morning names some, focusing on the battle for trans rights:

A Case For Hope: The Victories Trans People Won In 2023

But let’s not kid ourselves that the news is always or mostly good. Don Moynihan, on Substack (sadly), discusses how the ouster of Claudine Gay as the first black President of Harvard, was part of a right-wing campaign against Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in higher education that was open, malicious, disingenuous and succesful thanks to the complicity of the mainstream media. The campaign that removed the President of Harvard was about DEI, not plagiarism. His arguments rely strongly on the words of the people waging their campaign, who disuss it like they don’t know, or don’t care, that what they’re doing is evil.

Hydroxychloroquine could have caused 17,000 deaths during COVID, study finds - Mari Eccles, Politico. There’s this baked-in cultural assumption that quack remedies, even if they don’t work, at least do no harm. This assumption is mistaken. Some of these deaths, are, of course, on Donald Trump’s tiny hands.

Finally, this week’s new old The Hooded Crow song. It’s called “(I Feel So”) Unreal and was recorded at studio Sing Sing in Metslawier, Fryslan in 1995.

And if you’re in the mood for something more long-form, here’s Tidal Wave by the trad-metal band Awake from Groningen, recorded in 1999 at Square Wave Studios. I own this from when it came out and it’s pretty damned solid! 50 minutes, audio only so you don’t need to feel like you have to look at it while going about your day.
